Outgoing Erie County Republican Chairman James P. Domagalski was unanimously endorsed by county committee members Wednesday night in his effort to succeed the retiring Dale M. Volker for the 59th District State Senate seat.
The showdown expected earlier in the week against former Sheriff Patrick Gallivan, who is also considering a run, never materialized.
Gallivan earlier Wednesday contacted Ralph M. Mohr, temporary presiding officer of the county committee, to inform him he would not seek an endorsement delay as sources close to him were indicating Tuesday.
"As I have yet to make a decision as to whether or not I will be a candidate," Gallivan said Wednesday, "it would not be appropriate for me, at this point, to seek an endorsement."
Still, the former sheriff reiterated that he continues to "very seriously" explore a candidacy.
Domagalski emerged as the favorite of Erie County Republicans, but now must compete against other potential candidates in Wyoming, Livingston and Ontario counties, where Volker traditionally enjoyed strong support.
Former East Aurora Mayor David J. DiPietro, another potential candidate, did not attend the executive committee meeting, new county GOP chairman Nick Langworthy said.
Lancaster Village Mayor William G. Cansdale Jr. addressed the committee, but was not nominated, Langworthy added.
